Catherine Ford was raised in Bloomsbury by her grandmother and mother. When she was a young girl, Ford suffered anxiety due to an obsessional-compulsive condition. Ford became interested in acting during her teenage years and joined the National Youth Theatre. Ford gained entry to the Sylvia Young Theatre School, however, she decided after one week that she would not be a good for the school. Ford decided to apply for admission to Central School of Speech and Drama and winning a placement at the third time, applied and won an admission to the Central School of Speech and Drama. Shaun Dingwall was one of Ford's classmates. He was later to play frequent roles on the show as Pete Tyler and Doctor Who. Ford's debut on TV was the 1991 episode Surgical Spirit. By the when she finished her studies, Ford already went by "Catherine Tate". Tate was on television in the Nineties through shows like The Bill and Men Behaving Badly. She worked on stage regularly, and joined The Royal Shakespeare Company's season 2000-2001. However, Tate soon began to garner recognition for her stand-up comedic performances, which she added to her repertoire in 1996.
